Go to Route PlannerWinter excursions in Hossa National Park
Even in winter, there is a lot to see and to do in Hossa National Park! Several serviced routes are targeted to a variety of users. For example, along the Värikallio wilderness trail, you can hike or go on skis, snowshoes or on a fatbike to one of Hossa's most famous attractions: the 3,500–4,500-year-old rock paintings can also be admired in frosty weather. You can also enjoy the scenery of the national park the way you want on the easy Seipiniemen sujaus multipurpose track. The slightly more demanding Puukkojärvi trail is a route for the fans of traditional cross-country skiing. About halfway through the trail, there is a wilderness hut, which serves as an excellent place for a break.
Easy cross-country ski trails for beginners and families with children
On a biting frosty winter day, nothing is more rewarding than a cross-country skiing trip! If you are a beginner or have smaller skiers with you, these trails are great destinations to start with.
Short loops are suitable for everyone. Kuhmo's Harakkasaari sun ski trail offers magnificent views. Dogs are also welcome on leash, and snowshoeing is possible next to the trail. Starting close to the town centre, Unskin ura illuminated ski trail is also suitable for beginners and families thanks to the relatively flat terrain. By these trails, there are lean-to shelters or campfire sites for breaks. The Teddy's ski trail from the Hossa Nature Center is also perfect for the whole family.
Even longer cross-country skiing trips are possible on the trails that run on flat, snow-covered terrain. Beginners or groups with the youngest members of the family can go on the Hepokangas ski tour which is a favourite among of the people of Kuhmo. Additionally, dogs are welcome at Suomussalmi's easy Akonvaara dog track. Along these trails, there are lean-to shelters and campfire sites suitable for a break where you can enjoy lunch together. Thanks to a lunch break, even a longer trip goes with ease in the form of a day trip!
Winter cycling in snow-covered landscapes
Fatbike is also suitable for winter conditions, and the Wild Taiga area offers a wide range of routes for winter cycling. Some of the routes are also suitable for novice fatbikers, as you can easily stop to have a break by a lean-to shelter. Besides, these trails don’t rule out people without bikes: many of them are multi-purpose, which means you can also access them on snowshoes or go on winter hikes! For example, on Hossa National Park’s Jatkonvaara multipurpose trail, the beautiful lake and hill scenery of the area can be admired on a fatbike, on snowshoes, on skis or on foot.
