Explore the local culture on themed trails
The Musical Forest of Suomussalmi is a must-see! On the trail, you can play large-sized instruments that are built in the forest. On the Kurimon kulttuuripolku thematic trail, you're introduced to the history of the Suomussalmi area and its evergreen forest of the nature reserve with the help of the trail's signposts and labels.
The most important cultural sites in the centre of Kuhmo can be explored on the Kuhmo Cultural Promenade. Along this walking route that runs in the beautiful landscapes of Lake Lammasjärvi and River Pajakkakoski, you can also enjoy the local cafés and restaurants. Another option for cultural experiences is the Kilpelänkangas circle trail, where you can explore traces of the Winter War and memorials of forestry work. You can get to know the local war history in more detail at the Winter War Museum in Kuhmo.
Hiking trips for the whole family
On the Petola Nature Trail in Kuhmo, you can learn about the senses and lifestyles of large carnivores right in the courtyard of the Petola Nature Center. The nature trail is accessible with a wheelchair and with a baby carriage.
In Hossa National Park, there are two accessible trails. Along Huosilampi accessible trail, there are accessible piers from which you can admire natural waters and go fishing. You can enjoy the peaceful surroundings by the lean-in shelter. Muikkupuro Accessible Trail leads to one of the most beautiful places in the national park: the lean-to shelter of Muikkupuro. By the sandy-bottomed lake and a clear water stream, you can relax and let go of the busy everyday life.
Slightly more challenging but nevertheless easy route, Syväjärven shore trail in Kuhmo, is suitable for the whole family, and you can also go fishing in its recreational fishing area. There are also several campfire sites along the trail.
