Inline skating tour at the regatta in Oberschleißheim
Hello dear users,
Hello dear users,
My name is Marie and I am 9 years old. In this story I will tell you about my family trip to the rowing regatta in Oberschleissheim. I enjoy spending time with my parents and siblings rollerblading, playing beach soccer and stand up paddling. My dad has also included an exciting quiz on the subject of sport in our tour. I can compete with my siblings and learn a lot about the different sports and the European Championships. I hope you have as much fun reading it as I did on our tour.
You can find the tour to the story here .

Yay, the weekend is finally here! I've been looking forward to it all week. The weather is going to be great and we have planned another family trip. We are all coming along: Mum, Dad, my big sister Lena and my little brother Jonas. Our destination is the regatta in Oberschleißheim. The 1972 Olympic Games took place there - really cool! Soon the European Championships in rowing and canoeing will take place there, so we definitely want to go and see the regatta. I'm looking forward to it so much!

Finally we arrive at the car park. I grab my inline skates and walk with my siblings to the starting point. We immediately throw ourselves into our inline skates and want to go straight away. But then we hear Mum call out: ''Stop, kids, you have to put on your helmets and pads first!'' ''Oh no, it always takes sooo long'', I say annoyed. Dad winks at me and says: ''It's great, that way you're protected and don't have to be afraid when riding.''. He's right about that! We have our pads and helmets on, so we can finally start! We set off together and to give Jonas some momentum, I take him by the hand and pull him along. ''Yay, I've never gone that fast before, it's really fun'', he shouts. Everyone laughs. The cool wind feels really nice in this warm weather. I watch as rowers and canoeists pass us in the water. They are really fast! They must be professionals. Maybe I want to become a canoeist one day, then I could take part in big competitions like the European Championships. That would be really cool!

When we reach the end of the rowing course, we take a short break before continuing. Here Dad asks us a few quiz questions. I hope I can answer them better than Lena and Jonas. ''How long is the distance that the canoeists and rowers cover from the start to here? a) 200 m b) 2.2 km c) 10 km'', asks Dad. Phew, that's a tricky question. The distance we travelled to get here was already very long, but I don't think it was 10 km and 200 m would be too short. I decide on answer b) 2.2 km. ''That's right, Marie, you've been paying attention'', says Dad. As a reward I get a jelly bear. Yummy! The quiz isn't over yet", says Dad, "Who's faster: a canoeist or a rower? a) canoeist b) rower c) both equally fast.''. ''I know it, I know it", Lena exclaims, "the rowers on the course overtook the canoeists earlier. So it must be answer b).''. ''Great, right again'', says Dad, ''you're already real professionals.''. Now we can move on. Mum clocks the time it takes us to get from one 500-metre tower to the next. Lena and I make it in 2 minutes. Not bad at all. Leon doesn't dare yet and therefore prefers to stay with Mum.

Now we've gone really fast, I'm completely out of breath. We sit down on the right side of the grandstand to catch our breath. Dad has the next quiz question ready. He asks: ''How long does it take a professional rower at the Olympic Games to cover the entire distance to and from the regatta? a) about 1 hour b) less than 2 minutes c) less than 11 minutes''. ''We already needed 2 minutes for the 500 metres'', I shout, ''I think an hour is too long, so it must be less than 11 minutes.''. ''A clever combination'', Dad says and hands me the next jelly bear as a reward. It couldn't get any better than that, I learn great new things about the sport at the regatta and get sweets to boot. I already love our trip! The last part of the regatta route is really fast. Back at the starting point, Mum praises us: "Now you've gone 5 km, that's the same distance that the water sportsmen go. I am proud of you, you did a great job!"

After all that sport, I'm very thirsty and my stomach is starting to growl. That's when the Beach Bar comes in handy. I love it! Here, everything is full of sand, we can lie down in the deckchairs and look at the path we have just driven along ourselves. We have really earned this break. Lena, Jonas and I enjoy some delicious chips with ketchup. Now I feel invigorated again! "Who wants to play a game of beach soccer?'', Dad calls. We all shout loudly: "Me!". "But first you have to answer two quiz questions", Mum says. Nothing could be easier, I was really good at the last two questions! "How many players play in a beach volleyball team? a) 2 players b) 6 players c) 10 players", Dad asks. I have to guess, I've never heard of that before. I think it's 6 players'', I guess. "Unfortunately wrong'', says Dad, ''there are only two players.''. It's a pity, I wouldn't have thought so, but at least I've learned something. The next question is: How tall is the tallest player in the German men's national volleyball team? a) 2.11 m b) 2.32 m c) 1.89m. 2.32 m is huge. Is it even possible to be that tall? I decide on 2.11 m because Dad is already 1.90 m tall, so that can't be the biggest. "Great! That's right. Now you've more than earned playing beach soccer at the beachcourts'', Dad says. It's so much fun to romp around in the soft sand and play beach soccer with my family. It almost feels like being on holiday.

Now we've been playing for a long time. I'm already feeling really warm and I wouldn't say no to a cool down. Mum seems to think so too, because she says: "Let's go for a swim in the lake. A little refreshment will do us all good.". That's just what I need. We walk the short way through some trees to the regatta lake. Wow, it's beautiful! The water shines so brightly blue and everything around is full of green trees and bushes. My siblings and I immediately jump into the water over the footbridge. That feels so good!

We are drying in the sun when suddenly Dad comes through the trees with a big board and a paddle. "Look what I've rent us", he shouts proudly, "you can try out paddling with the stand-up paddle. Maybe you'll want to do more and try canoeing or rowing at some point.". Oh yes, that's just the thing for me. "You know what comes first, don't you?", Dad says. "Of course it's a quiz question'', my siblings and I say at the same time. "Exactly, but this time it's a tricky question for you. When was the last time the Olympic Games were held at the regatta? a) 2019 b) 1990 c) 1972.''. I'll have to think about that. I don't think 2019, that wouldn't be long enough ago. But I remember hearing something about 1972, so I decide on answer c). "Great, you're very attentive, my little pro", Mum says. "Are you ready for the last question?'', Dad asks. Only one more question? What a pity! I had so much fun with the quiz. Now I have to try again. "Which discipline did not take place at the 1972 Olympic Games? a) Hockey b) Archery c) Badminton'', Dad says excitedly. Archery sounds more like the Middle Ages to me, so I decide on b). "Unfortunately wrong, it's badminton. I'm still very proud of you, Marie! You answered all but two questions correctly. You're going to become a sports professional'', Dad says proudly.

After the last exciting quiz questions, we go straight into the water with the Stand Up Paddle. It's pretty shaky at first, but together with Lena I manage to paddle quite well. I think that with a little practice I could really become a famous canoeist at the European Championships. The day couldn't end any better!

Completely dried off, we finally pack up our bathing things and make our way to the car. Satisfied, I get in and reflect on this perfect day. I spent time with my family, learned great new things in the quiz, was able to let off steam with inline skating, beach volleyball and stand-up paddling and relax in the sun. I couldn't have imagined a better weekend getaway.
