Culinary: Up high – Picnic on the peaks of Munich

To get a fresh impression of the provincial city panorama, I persuade Massimo to go mainly to places from where the skyline can be seen.
Munich's Rooftops – Tour across the city's highlights
This cycling tour shows you magical viewpoints in Munich from which you can marvel at the breathtaking cityscape.A beer in the morning and the day is yours
We continue cycling towards the Olympic Hill to reach the summit. "What's here?“, asks Massimo, pointing to a beer garden. The Olympiaalm has existed since the 1960s and at that time it served workers who were building the Olympia Park for the Olympic Games in 1972. "Hobts an duaschd?“, someone mumbles. Massimo looks at me questioningly. He speaks fluent German, but he doesn't understand the Bavarian host. "Do you want a drink?“, he repeats. The sun has just risen, but Massimo is a big fan of German beer and orders.
At the top of the 56 m hill, he pulls out a pack of grissini. "Goes perfectly with the beer“, he says and hands me the pastry. The symbiosis of crispy rosemary-parmesan breadstick and the hop is truly an aromatic taste explosion.
Time for a nap
Next we go via Münchner Freiheit to the English Garden. We take a short break at the Monopteros. The beer-bike combination seems to have affected Massimo slightly. He lies in the lush greenery in front of the Greek temple and snoozes. "We'll have coffee in a minute“, I promise and shake him awake.
Via the university quarter we reach Cafe Vorhoelzer, which is on the roof of the Vorhoelzer Forum. I order the infamous Vorhoelzer special plate and a double espresso. The magnificent view over the city centre rounds off the excellent breakfast.
The former parcel post hall
Via Stiglmaierplatz we reach Hacker Bridge. I look west towards the neighbouring Donnerberger Bridge. Next to the listed parcel post hall, two 155 m high towers are planned to be built here in the future. The decision from the citizens' referendum was only legally binding for one year. Nevertheless, the responsible authorities have so far been divided over the building project. In my opinion, the two skyscrapers would significantly enhance the view of the "Golden Gate for the poor".
We continue to Theresienhöhe. "I've been here before“, Massimo smiles. Memories of his last visit to the Oktoberfest come flooding back. We climb a spiral staircase to the head of the almost 20 m high Bavaria statue. Massimo rummages in his backpack and pulls out a salami and olives from his grandfather's garden. I enjoy the delicacies and the unique view over the Oktoberfest Grounds.
Misplaced
Slowly my stomach growls again. I remember a tip from a consultant who is a friend of mine. He recommended to try the sun terrace of the Bayerischer Hof. "From there you have the best view in the whole City of Munich“, he enthused, and highlighted the excellent cuisine. It's worth a try. My euphoria is quickly dampened. The view I can catch is magnificent – no question about it. The prices, however, are beyond our budget. So we decide to leave and have something to eat later in the Werksviertel.
Before we leave the city centre, I want to show Massimo the Old Peter. More than 300 steps lead us to the viewing platform of the tower. I feel the kilometres covered. At the top we are pleasantly surprised – the chimes in the neighbouring town hall tower begin. 5.00 PM – perfect timing.
Molto bene
Energised by the red wine, we continue to our last stop, the Werksviertel. We park our bikes and walk into the Atelierstraße. Food cravings. The choice falls on the Thai “Khanittha“. "Molto bene!“, Massimo seems to like the dish.
To top it all off, we take a ride on Germany's largest ferris wheel. From up here I get another view of Munich. I wouldn't want to spoil the historic old town with skyscrapers either. I think a skyscraper-free zone within the old town ring is appropriate, but a skyscraper-free metropolis is backwoods.
