Nature in South Karelia is naturally shaped by the numerous waters. Not only lakes but rivers and canals run through the region too. Also, extensive forests, fields and swamplands can be found in South Karelia. The distinctive characteristic of the region is the Salpaukasselkä mountain range, which divides it into different parts. While 75% of the land area of South Karelia is covered with forests, the proportion of bogs is very low compared to the rest of the country.
South Karelia is also home to Lake Saimaa, the largest lake system in Finland and the fourth largest lake in Europe. Saimaa consists of countless lakes and watercourses, is connected to the Baltic Sea in the south and Lake Ladoga in Russian Karelia and is home to the endangered Saimaa ringed seal. The water quality in Lake Saimaa is mostly good, suitable for swimming and in some areas even for drinking water.
