Kuopion kierros - an easy route in the city parks of Kuopio
Savonia University of Applied Sciences Verified partner Explorers Choice
Admire the urban nature beauty on this trip that takes you from Kuopio Market Square through Snellman Park and the lively Passenger Harbor to Väinölänniemi, where you can experience romantic gazebos, walk to Rönö Bridge and enjoy the sun on the cliffs behind the Peräniemi Casino. Numerous beaches offer recreation.
Family park Brahenpuisto, between Brahenkatu and Kuopionlahti, is named after Count Pietari Brahe, who founded old Kuopio in 1653.
The route runs past the Piispanpuisto Park and the Old Kuopio Museum (Korttelimuseo) to the Valkeisenpuisto Park, where you can even fish. There are also some public sculptures in Valkeisenlampi Park: Pushkin's statue made by Oleg Gomorov is derived from Pskov, the sister city of Kuopio. Antti Immonen's steel monument "Mökit ja mäet" is a sculpture to the post-war construction (1939-1945) to honor the work of the Builders. Kevät (The Spring) sculpture, made by Heikki Nieminen in 1954, is placed in a beautiful place on the shore of Valkeisenlampi Pond.

Turn-by-turn directions
Start the route from the Kuopio Market Square along the Kauppakatu street to Snellman Park and continue along Vahtivuorenkatu to the Matkustajasatama, Passanger Harbour, where many cruise ships leave. The harbor also has a lively restaurant offering during the summer.
Then follow the coast to Väinölänniemi, the oldest city park in Kuopio. There is also the city's most famous beach, Vänäri, with the Cafe Väinö. At the tip of Väinölänniemi-peninsula you can admire the scenery of historic gazebos, one of the most idyllic ones located at the end of a small Unholanniemi. The rocky beach behind the Peräniemi casino is also a popular sunbathing and picnic spot.
Go through the Brahenpuisto Park and continue on the walkway to Kirkkokatu. If you have time, you can visit Korttelimuseo, the Old Kuopio Museum. It is a block of eleven old wooden houses. The oldest buildings are the late 1700s and the youngest from the late 1800s. Their interiors represent living conditions and living styles of different families from the 1800s to the 1930s.
Then continue along Hallikatu street and Lapinlankuja street to the corner of Kasarmikatu and Minna Canthin katu Street, from where the route joins Valkeisenpuisto park's trails.
Valkeisenpuisto, with its surroundings, forms some 9 ha hectare of varied green area, with its centre of Valkeisenlampi. In the park, you can enjoy varying vegetation. Some of the plant species also have name tags or variety charts attached.
Valkeisenpuisto also belongs to the Geological Research Centre and the geological database relating to rock databases and their origin.
Extensive lawn areas and a comprehensive park bench network provide opportunities to stop for a picnic or rest and admire the urban nature beauty. The green park of Valkeisenpuisto includes Niirala Transport Park and the small Niirala Alpine Ridge.
The route continues to the City Theater and goes along the Tulliportinkatu back to the Market Square.
