South Tyrol is virtually predestined for ski mountaineering. The southern side of the main Alpine ridge is snow-sure, and you can go on beautiful tours here throughout the winter and well into the spring. Whether in the Sarntal Alps, the Passeier Valley, the Pragser Valley, the Tauferer Ahrntal or the Ortler area, off-piste mountain and skiing experiences await you that will make your holiday something very special. In each region, mountain and ski tour guides with local knowledge are at your disposal and numerous courses on ski touring are offered.
Ski touring in the Val Passiria
The South Tyrolean Passeier Valley is a high alpine paradise for ski tourers. Here you will find countless ski touring routes, the most beautiful of which run along the southern side of the main Alpine ridge with its 3000-metre peaks, framed by the Texelgruppe Nature Park and the Sarntal and Stubai Alps. A very demanding ski tour leads up to the Kolbenspitze. The approximately 10.8-kilometre-long route is rather leisurely in the lower area, while it gets really steep and demanding at the top. For this popular ski tour, which takes about 4:15 hours, you need a good level of fitness and experience in ski mountaineering. On the way, you will cross magnificent larch forests and pass some cosy alpine huts. The route leads up a steep slope to the summit cross.
Ski touring routes for every level
While ski mountaineering used to be something for seasoned outdoorsmen, it has now become a popular popular sport. The motivation for winter mountaineering is very diverse. The nature lover who finds peace and energy in the snow-covered mountains needs different ski touring routes than the fitness-loving endurance athlete. No matter what your dream ski tour looks like, you will find the right route in South Tyrol. The fairytale region in the Dolomites, which boasts many sunny days in winter, makes it possible.
Ski touring offer in South Tyrol:
- Piste skiing - ascent with skins on the edge of the piste or on ascent tracks, safe descent on the groomed piste.
- Variant skiing - taking the lift up the mountain, then a short ascent with skins to the summit to find the longest and most rewarding descent possible.
- Fashion ski tour - popular touring hotspots that are quick to reach and relatively snow-sure.
- Classic ski touring - independent ski touring, individually or in a group, usually without an ascent track.
- Ski mountaineering - high mountains with potential danger, additional equipment and the necessary skills are essential, guided ski mountaineering tours are offered in the Dolomites and surrounding area.
- Ski traverse - the supreme discipline! Ski touring routes lasting several days with overnight stays in mountain huts.
- Freeriding - descents in open terrain, off the marked and controlled ski slopes, for good skiers only.
Please note that ski touring on pistes is generally prohibited in South Tyrol as well as in the whole of Italy, but this ban can be lifted by the operators of ski resorts, so as a ski tourer you should always observe the individual regulations of the respective ski resorts.
