In Kuhmo, you can easily get to know the local cultural history in various museums and exhibitions. Juminkeko is an information centre for the Kalevala and Karelian culture, where you can learn about the Finnish national epic, Kalevala, and the local culture and its roots. Another significant Kalevala-related place to visit is Vienan Portti, where the central character Väinämöinen's model, Rimmin Uljaska, lived. In the building, you can still feel the atmosphere of the past.
The Winter War Museum presents the events of the Winter War between the Soviet Union and Finland (1939–40) in Kuhmo. The Tuupala Home Museum and Suomussalmi Home Museum also tell visitors about the past ways of life and local history. A more recent and well-known cultural destination by Highway 5 is the Silent People, which consists of about 1,000 dressed-up hay heads. In summer, you can enjoy concerts by a cup of coffee as well as the international atmosphere of the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and Sommelo at Art Centre Kuhmo, which is also known as the living room of the people of Kuhmo.
