Totovaaran tunturireitti
Hike to the wilderness fells in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park and savour its unique sense of utter peace and quiet. Grab your day pack and climb from the parking area at Totovaara Hill to Aakenustunturi Fell. Watch your step here, because there are a lot of rocks and roots on this trail.
When you reach the Vasalaki summit, you’re already at the highest point of the route. Its spectacular views of the landscape stretch across the forests and mires to the fells of Ylläs. The extensive forest and mire area between the fells is home to many of the national park’s animal species.
The trail continues along the tree line to the scenic Haavepalo Lapp hut. Enjoy a tasty picnic and the chance to gaze at the magnificent fells. Take some time to simply savour the peace and quiet of the fells. The rest of the hike is quite easy, as you return to the starting point along an old logging road.

Safety information
The weather can change rapidly on the fell, and visibility can deteriorate very quickly. Always prepare for cold and rain; you should be prepared for wintery conditions in spring and autumn even if the weather is warm when you set off.
Mobile phone reception is not available on all hiking routes. The signal is usually better in higher and more open terrain. Download the 112 Finland application free of charge and activate it before starting your hike. Remember that mobile phone batteries run down quickly in cold conditions.

Dress according to the weather and choose footwear that is suitable for varied terrain.
Take something to eat, a drink, warm clothing, a fully charged phone, matches, toilet paper, a map, a first aid kit and a rubbish bag with you.
Finnish tap water is very clean. Fill your water bottles before starting out, because you may not necessarily have access to natural water. The availability of natural water varies, and each person uses it at their own risk.
