Thank you for showing us this amazing route!
Me and my gf hiked this in early August 21 and it was amazing. It was our first time going hiking so we needed 8 days instead of the advertised 5 even with taking a shortcut, but we planned for that.
Like Pida wrote, the hardest part is the climb in the beginning. With slopes up to 40° you really need good hiking boots that cover the ankle and it was a struggle still. We took two days for the first 12 km but like I said, were completely untrained and unexperienced so you might be faster. We also overpacked and had way too heavy backpacks as one does on their first trip.
The weather was great, up to 14°C and about -1°C at night on the plateau. I dont know why its called a plateau btw, constant up and down...
We packed all our food and didnt aquire anything on the way, but you could, like Pida said. All the huts were unlocked but they might not be when you arrive, so make sure to get a DNT membership.
Like I said earlier we took a shortcut south a few km before Harteigen (the big mountain in the first half) and met the route again to go west. That saved us about 15km and was a good shortcut to know and have planned.
On our way we met a guy that said he hiked the trail in July 20 and it was very frozen over, he said he hiked glaciers for hours on end so be aware of that. In early August we only needed to cross about 8 glaciers not longer that 100m which was slippery but not dangerous cause they didnt lead down the side of the mountain.
Some advice that would have been helpful to us:
- Shoes that cover the ankle are a must, so is good rain gear
- the trail is often very muddy so waterproof boots were nice
- Theres plenty of lakes with trout, fishing licences are easy to book online
- Theres no cell reception for days so bring an emergency beacon
- prebook the shuttle down from trolltunga online or you might end up not getting down to town easily
- The bus lines worked just fine but were often a little late so dont plan them too close together
- like Pida already wrote the track is marked with red Ts but they were sometimes easy to miss and our Garmin inReach Mini helped us to not get lost. We saved the route on it and it always showd us which direction to go which was nice
Hope this helps someone and thanks to the author and Pida for inspiring us to make this trip, it was amazing!!
