The small town of Ystad is located directly on the south coast of Sweden. The name "Ysted" was mentioned for the first time in 1244, but there were probably already settlements earlier. Ystad Monastery, founded in 1258, which houses the town museum today, is one of the best-preserved medieval monastery complexes in the country. The town's main church, the Sankta Maria Kyrka, also dates from the 13th century. In the picturesque old town, you can admire numerous half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries.
You can also reach the Danish island of Bornholm and the city of Swinemünde in Poland by ferry.
Ystad is also known to all crime fiction fans, as it was the home of the famous detective Kurt Wallander, who plays the leading role in the novels by Henning Mankell. Many places mentioned in the books and films exist in reality, such as the house at Mariagatan 10 or the Hotel Continental, where Wallander liked to dine.
