Ales stenar
The natural monument is situated near the small village of Kåseberga on the south coast of Schonen and consists of 59 rocks placed in an oval of 67 by 19 m.
The rocks vary in size, up to almost 2 tons in weight. They are partly from the direct surroundings, partly from the quarry near Simrishamn about 20 km away. It is assumed that some of the megaliths have initially been parts of other monuments, "stolen" for the construction.
The dating of the stone ship proves to be somewhat tricky. These constructions are Vikings' tradition, which would place the date of origin between the years 800 and 1050 AD. But there are also similar monuments known that must have been originated already a millennium before Christ. During the excavations at the end of the 1990s, processed flintstones, shards and an urn with human bones were found. These were dated approximately 500 AD.
Sources also show that the arrangement of the stones was changed several times. A drawing from 1777 shows rocks to the left and right of the central ship settlement, which are no longer there today. Furthermore, only 16 of the 59 stones stood upright, and a large part was covered with sand. In 1916, the layout was reconstructed, i.e., some of the stones were placed upright and the sand was removed.
A completely different theory about the origin of Ales stenar comes from the astronomer Bobby Lind. He assumes that the Hyperboreans built the ship settlement between 700 and 400 B.C to measure the time.
