Bike tour for sports enthusiasts from the regatta to the Flugwerft in Oberschleißheim
Hi everyone!
I'm Lukas, 22 years old and I study math at the LMU in Munich. Due to my studies, I sit very often and especially for a long time at my desk. You probably know this from your studies or your work. That's why I'm always looking forward to the weekend so I can get some exercise on my bike. My bike and I have been inseparable since I got it as a Christmas present from my parents. Luckily, my two best friends Luis and Flo share this passion with me.
Last weekend, my two friends and I went on a bike tour in Oberschleissheim, which we enjoyed so much that I want to tell you about our tour.
If you want to experience the tour yourself, here you can find it .
Circumnavigating the regatta track
My friends and I come from Feldmoching and cycled via the Regattafeldweg to the starting point of our tour, the Regatta parking lot. It was really crowded, the parking lots were nailed full. Luckily we arrived directly by bike, we thought. Arrived at the parking lot we cycled directly over the small bridge and past the grandstand to the regatta track. After a short break we started to cycle around the 5 km long regatta track clockwise. I was really sweating and happy to wear a hat. The sun was very intensive, so the wind was really pleasant. Every 500 meters a sign protruded from the meadow, which gave us a good indication of how long we still have ahead of us. We could see a few rowers and canoeists next to us on the turquoise water. However, we were very focused on getting around the round as quickly as possible, so we didn't really notice them. It went faster than we thought and we had already circumnavigated the rowing regatta course once.Starting point of the regatta track

Trip to Oberschleißheim
After we cycled back to the parking lot, we were warmed up and wantet to keep going. However, we were only at the beginning of our bike tour and our energy had to be enough for the rest of the tour, which is why we decided to take the path towards Schleißheim Castle at a comfortable pace. When we turned off the small forest path at the parking lot, I took a deep breath. The forest air was pleasant, the forest ground soft to ride on, and the trees cast shadows. The path took us trough a field where corn had already begun to sprout slightly.Impressions from the trip to Oberschleißheim

"Step on the gas guys," I shouted to Luis and Flo. Ahead of us was the highway bridge, which we had to pedal hard to get up. At the top, we could barely hear our own words as umpteen cars passed underneath us every second. "I can already see the top of the castle," Flo exclaimed. Indeed, we could see the New Schleißheim Castle from the highway bridge. With a tailwind, we headed down the bridge onto a gravel path. I had to hold my handlebars tightly and be careful not to miss them, as there were so many potholes and stones on the way. After the gravel road ended, we could see a part of the "teaching and experimental farm" of the veterinary faculty of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich on our left. The fact that cows were kept on the premises could neither be overlooked nor ignored. Right next to our bike path was namely the cowshed from which some of the cows looked out and mooed loudly. "In a few minutes we will have made it and we will have deserved a break in front of the castle", I said to my friends. After we followed the road and drove through the archways of the Wilhelmshof, we could first see the Old Schleißheim Castle. As we rode through the last archway, a magnificent huge castle stood in front of us: the New Schleißheim Castle. We parked our bikes and took a seat down on one of the white benches right in front of the castle. Our motto: first drink a big sip of water and enjoy the breathtaking scenery! Because of the many tourists who have looked at the castle, I did not know where to look first. After about 20 minutes we decided to continue in the direction of Flugwerft round.

Circumnavigation of the Flugwerft round
With a view of the New Schleißheim Castle, we followed the paved ground to get to the bridge. This was the starting point of our approx. 8 km long Flugwerft bike tour. Due to the nice weather, there were a lot of other bicyclists, inline skaters and pedestrians on the road that day, that every few meters we either overtook someone or got side-swiped ourselves. We followed the tarred path through an avenue of trees and after a few hundred meters, looking to the right, we could spot the Schleißheim airfield. A few bystanders stopped there and watched the planes taking off and landing from the fence. However, we continued our ride, because we had a break just at the castle. While I was pedaling, my gaze kept swiveling to the right and left. Around me I could see mostly only fields, on which the grass has already taken slowly sap green color. A few rabbits hopped across the fields and disappeared right back into their burrow. I could feel the nature at that moment and the light breeze gave me the feeling of freedom. When we wanted to drive through the small village Hochmutting, sheep blocked our way. The shepherd crossed the road in front of us with his flock and his two dogs to get from his farm to the field. When the road was free again we continued towards the Fliegertreff beer garden. Slowly it became quite exhausting to drive in the blazing sun. The sweat ran down my forehead and back. But fortunately there was a short distance ahead of us in the shade under the trees. "Guys, let's go! Just a few more turns and we'll reach the Fliegertreff beer garden," I said. "Let's kick it up a notch. Whoever gets there first will be served a cold beer." None of us let anyone tell us twice. We all stomped hard on our pedals. "That was a close race, but I won!" said Flo. I was annoyed, because I would have liked to win that beer now, too. We parked our bikes and grabbed one of the last free seats in the beer garden. Under chestnut trees in the shade we first enjoyed the cold drinks. In front of us we could watch the planes taking off and landing. We had a clear view of the runway. That was great! Where else do you get the chance to watch planes so close? After one hour, we continued on our way. Now we had the biggest part of the Flugwerft round behind us and only about 2 km to the castle. On the way there, we drove past the Flugwerft Schleißheim. Through the huge glass windows, we could see a few of the aircraft on exhibit from a distance. If the weather had been bad, this would have definitely been worth a visit for us.Impressions from the Flugwerft round

Way back to the regatta
When we arrived at the castle, we briefly considered whether we should drive to the Berglwald in Oberschleißheim to run the Trimm-dich-Pfad loop there. We also discussed about a volleyball match at the sports stadium. However, all three of us were of the same opinion that we would rather have another stop somewhere when the weather was as good as it was today. Therefore we went to the rowing regatta and stopped at the beach bar. The way back led us past the regatta lake, where we could watch a few people swimming. "Puh, that would still be too cold for me", Luis said to us. After a few hundred meters along the lake we came to a fork in the forest, we followed it to the right and could already see the beach bar on an elevation.Stay at Munich Beach Resort
Deck chairs were placed on the white sand and lounge music sounded from the big speakers. "This is just what we need right now," I said to my friends. After grabbing a homemade lemonade and a burger with sweet potato fries, we sat down in the lounge chairs and just enjoyed the moment. Through our deck chairs, which were in the front row, we could see perfectly down to the regatta track from the elevation of the beach bar. Now we watched the rowers and canoeists in a relaxed way. Through our seat neighbors, we learned that the regatta track was built in 1972 for the Summer Olympics and has been a venue for rowing and canoe racing competitions ever since. In 2022, the European Championships will also be held in these sports. "Awesome, that will definitely be a huge event," I said.View from the beach bar to the regatta track during sunset

Way home
After two hours of pure relaxation, we returned to the parking lot on our bikes and then headed home. A beautifully sunny, sporty and eventful day came to an end and we were all three in agreement: we will do the tour again! Preferably at the time when the European Championships take place, so that we can experience the great spectacle live with our own eyes.- Regatta track: https://www.muenchen.de/int/en.html
