The word "ärjä" describes a windy place or a steep beach cliff. It truly reflects the nature of the island Ärjä. The beaches of the island are mostly shallow sandy beaches and the water is pure and clear. A kayaking trip around the island is ideal to explore this mysterious island from the water. The tour starts from Säippä Pier and is worth doing clockwise. There are plenty of attractions: high sandbanks, fallen old tree trunks, a drift sand area and a wreck of a sunken old barge. Take a break at the Kalamaja wilderness hut and campfire site. Finland's largest inland open waters opens up in front of you. After the break, the excursion continues on the northern shores of Ärjä and through the coves to the tip of Kirkkosäikkä. Once you get around the narrow sparsly vegetated bank, wich is a protected bird nesting place, a three kilometer curved sand beach opens up in front of you. At the other end of the beach curve you arrive back to your starting point.
