The history of the Battle of Koljonvirta comes to life on this route. Koljonvirta is known for this famous battle on October 27, 1808, which took place in the Finnish War between Sweden and Russia. The path is guided with signs telling about the historical events. Besides the history, you can admire the beautiful lake sceneries along this path. There is a lovely campfire site in the tip of a small peninsula, surrounded by the lake.
The Koljonvirra Guidance center has an exhibition presenting the Finnish War and the Battle of Koljonvirta. Here you can explore different eras and layers of history. Visit the home museum of Finnish national author Juhani Aho, in one of the old houses surrounding a picturesque yard. There is also the Mansikkaniemi summer theater, a campsite with café and restaurant services, a riding center and program services.
Koljonvirta is known by The Tales of Ensign Stål written by Johan Ludvig Runeberg, published in 1848. Romantic tales of war-time heroes were a huge success at the time and three important main characters (Sandels, Sven Tuva and Ziden) fought in the Koljonvirta battle.

Turn-by-turn directions
You will find the start of the hike near highway 5. Take the walkway leading from the car park through the Koljonvirta Guidance Center and the Juhani Aho Museum to the old parsonage yard, where you see the starting point of the marked history path.
The route runs through the picturesque Mansikkaniemi landscape to the tip of a small peninsula with an atmospheric campfire site. From there, the route returns clockwise, circling back to the corner of the summer theater at the courtyard of the museum. Along the route there are infoboards about the Finnish War and Koljonvirta battle.

The Koljonvirta area is located approximately 5 kilometers to north from the city center of Iisalmi, along the road to Oulu.
Directions from the city center:
Go north from the city center for approx. four kilometers, take the third exit from the roundabout and drive for 500 meters more.
Directions from Oulu:
When arriving from the direction of Oulu Koljonvirta can be easily reached. The road from Oulu goes across the bridge of Koljonvirta towards Iisalmi. From the crossing to Kiuruvesi, drive 1,5 kilometers further.
Directions from Kajaani:
When arriving from Kajaani on the Finnish national road 5/European road 63 from north, take the exit "Kalajoki, Iisalmi". Drive 2,5 kilometers until you arrive at a roundabout. Take the second turn to the right and drive 500 meters further.
Parking
There are several parking lots in the area. The open-air summer theatre has space for 72 cars. From the lot a beautiful path leads past the Koljonvirta guidance center and the statue of Dolgorugi right up to the museum of Juhani Aho and the open-air summer theatre.Coordinates
